United States Postal Service (USPS) Unclaimed Freight

The United States Postal Service's Mail Recovery Center auctions off packages that were undeliverable and unreturnable and/or packages that were damaged. Damaged packages are frequently compensated by insurance, leaving the contents of the packages up for auction.

The Postal Service has been conducting public auctions since the early 1900's.

Typically, the auctioned items may include everything under the sun, but are often heavy on books, Cds and dvds. The USPS held  online auctions using Ebay. Now , USPS is using the Gov Deals website here. Years ago, there were also auctions at the St Paul Mail Recovery Center and the San Francisco Mail Recovery Center.
If you're flying into Atlanta for this auction, you'll find the live traffic feed to the right helpful for avoiding traffic accidents and slow downs. Be sure to bookmark this page.

If you get extra lucky at the auction, winning bids on dozens of auction lots, you may want to consider taking the load home in a rental truck. By renting a truck you can deduct the truck and the cost of running of the renting the truck one way. If you get a deal on a flight and a rental car to the auction, transportation cost won't eat up your profits. You need to consider, if you take  big truck with you, what is the roundtrip cost of the fuel for the truck, versus flying in and driving out?

Using the information to the left, you can call to reserve a rental truck right from the auction, as soon as you see your winning bids exceed your ability to transport the merchandise home.

The U-haul at Fulton Industrial is only two and half miles from the auction, near interstate 20, with easy access to hotels and restaurants.
While you're in Atlanta, you may want to top off the truck rental with auction merchandise won at other auction warehouses nearby, Four Seasons Auction,  the largest full-time, full service auction company in the Southeast..

The building has 50,000 sq. feet of heated and air-conditioned space and holds auctions every few days. There is sure to be an auction around the time you attend the USPS auction. Four Seasons has estate auction, storage and warehouse auctions and auctions, artwork, guns, coins, jewelry and more.
The unclaimed/damaged packages are no longer auctioned off on the second or third Wednesday of each month, at the USPS facility located in Atlanta, Georgia. Instead the items are auctioned off online here.

These auctions are for mail tubs full of merchandise. You will need to unload the tubs into your own containers.

For hauling away your winning bids, you can likely fit about four tubs into  a cargo van. Any more than that, you may want to consider renting a small U-Haul to take your merchadise home.
If you fly into Atlanta International Airport, you may want to stay overnight in an Atlanta hotel before and/or after the auction. As you can see on the map below, there are numerous hotels with a couple miles of both the auction and the U-haul truck rental location.

The Wingate, located at marker B on the map below,  has a free hot breakfast and they have a seasonal outdoor pool.

The Econolodge is located at marker D on the map below. The property has free wireless internet and free continental breakfast, no swimming pool.

Should you be so inclined, there is Six Flags Over Georgia only a few miles away. You could combine this business trip into a trip for the kids as well. You can stay at any of half dozen hotels nearby. The Sleep Inn is only 600 feet from Six Flags, has a free hot breakfast, free internet and an indoor pool all year long.
